A LIFE REMEMBERED – Sr Suzanne Goossens FMDM

‘Sr Sue or Susie’ as she was fondly known, died very peacefully on 1 December 2017 in La Verna at Ladywell Convent Godalming where she was lovingly cared for during her latter years of her life. She celebrated her 90th birthday on 20 February 2017, a great milestone indeed. Sr Sue was very organised and had chosen poems, hymns and readings for her own funeral service. This is one of her chosen poem/hymn. Just think of stepping on the shore… and finding it heaven. Of taking hold of a hand…and finding it God’s hand. Of breathing a new air…and finding it celestial. Of feeling invigorated…and finding it immortality. Of passing from storm and tempest…to an unknown calm of waking…and finding it home.

On 3 January 2018, FMDM sisters from England and Scotland including Sisters Catherina Dorrity and Eliza Hopkins from Ireland and staff from La Verna Ladywell were present for the funeral Mass which was held in Ladywell Chapel.  The date coincided close to our Patronal Feast Day on 1 January 2018 and this gave the opportunity for many sisters to be present for this occasion and to give thanks to God for the life of Susie. She was cremated on the same day and on 5 January after the 9.30am Mass, her ashes were interned in Ladywell cemetery.  May she rest in peace.
